courage

It is in the small things we see it.
The child's first step,
as awesome as an earthquake.
The first time you rode a bike,
wallowing up the sidewalk.
The first spanking when your heart
went on a journey all alone.
When they called you crybaby
or poor or fatty or crazy
and made you into an alien,
you drank their acid
and concealed it.

the commonplace

"The man is very far from being an artist" wrote Thomas Mann, "who does not know longing for the innocent, the simple ... for a little friendship, devotion, familiar human happiness -- the gnawing. surreptitious hankering for the bliss of the commonplace"

non-digital

As a point of principle, I never use photoshop or shoot anything digitally. Scanning images, though, is a necessary evil and occasionally happy accidents occur. The redder image is the original. The blue (more popular one) is the mistake.

Taken in Dublin, this image seemed appropriate for Sunday.

suture

The term 'Camera Suture' came to me by accident, a mis-hearing of 'Kama Sutra'. I didn't know that, in film theory, 'suture' is an appropriation from psychoanalysis and actually refers to the use of cinematic technique which generates positions in the audience. It’s effectively that 'gap' in the text of the film in which the subject/audience/player places him/herself: a you-shaped hole in the text which you stitch yourself in. An unexpected coincidence that a phrase picked at random actually refers precisely to the focus of my work.
