belong: chemical version

i am agonising over these images. one is a cleaner, more 'polite' image produced digitally. the other (detail) is a darker, stranger version produced in the darkroom, showing some chemical deterioration. instinctively, i prefer the lighter version --redder lips, gentler light--but the darker version--complete with the chemical 'noise' is the accurate one so--even against my own preferences--i guess that one wins. if an unpredictable chemical process and analogue printing is what i claim to do, i can't tweak the process to make something more attractive when it suits me.

Thank you to Kerstin Niemann, a curator at the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, for putting me in her 'Top 10 Photographers' this week. Details of the other nine can be found on the Saatchi news page.
